Celebrating Valentine’s Day dates back further than you might think. It’s not just a holiday conjured up by greetings cards companies but actually has its roots in a raucous Pagan spring & fertility festival called Lupercalia held on 15th of February. It was the Church who later hitched this festival to St Valentine, who became a martyr for love by marrying in secret when it was forbidden and was executed for it on February 14th.
Fast forward to 2010 when Leslie Knope, a character on TV comedy drama show Parks & Recreation declares February 13th as “Galantines Day” and the notion of an unofficial special day to celebrate the love we have for our favourite friends exploded.
